I need a fresh drinking hole

topic posted Fri, January 14, 2005 - 6:36 PM by  offlinedeepayan
I am kind of tired of going back to the same bars over and again and seeing the same people. I am almost
tempted to say that Seattle lacks "good" bars. For me good bar is one which doesn't has a TV. Must not have TV
must not have pull tabs. Places like capitol club, sea monster, barsa.. and my list stops.
Any suggestions

c-sound in pioneer square is pretty cool. I like the ambieance of the lava lounge....hmm...the noc noc is generally pretty neat.....uhm.....

no, thats about it for me.

i don't like the noc noc, other than the 50 cent cheap beer... the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired...

the lava lounge is good on week days... but on Friday and Saturday fairly swarms with fratty, trust fund kids looking to come slum it in the city at a "cool" bar... bleah!

      don't know c-sound

I think the rendevous and the nite lite are both great bars...

and, though it does have a tv, there is no beating the twilight exit... hands down the best bar in the city....

I guess thats a matter of opinion. I like the Twilight Exit, but I wouldnt say its the best bar in Seattle.

yes, these things are always a matter of opinion... absolutely

but to me, though i like many bars.. nothing tops the twilight for great staff, good stiff drinks, good juke box, excellent soul/garage dj on saturday nights, the best superbowl party in the city, the perfect "divey but not too divey" atmosphere... and a clientele which is an absolutely spot on perfect mixture of youthquaking scenesters (but not a sickening overabundance of them... just enough to be hip without putting any effort into it), locals to the neighborhood, and interesting characters to keep it all real

it's the ultimate... a true neighborhood bar with a little something extra... an appeal to the intrepidatiously hip... the real phonies mostly don't show up... because its just enough off the beaten path to keep them away... down on pine-pike where they should be...

granted I'm biased, for lots of reasons I'll not go into.. .but aren't we all when it comes to our "local" ????

so, what would you say is the best bar in seattle? and why?

My favorite bar changes with my mood. The 5 Point never lets me down. Neither does the Summit. But I wouldnt call them the best bars in Seattle. I would say Shortys probably comes closer to my favorite bar then any other.

I like all those places for sure... none of them comes close to competing with Le Twi, however..

of the three, i'd say the 5 point comes closest... Shortys I don't even think of as a bar... they HAVE a bar, but it's game room in my mind... I do love it, however

the slummit is also cool... unpretentious.... but low on atmosphere.... i sort of feel like i'm in a restaurant that serves liquor when i'm there... not in a bar that serves food... if you know what I mean

and, yeah, mood for sure... I don't go to the Twi EVERY time i go to a bar, (but I do go there probably 3 out of 4 or 5 times i go to a bar), sometimes I want a change of atmosphere....

for that I like the nite lite, the rendezvous, the lava, the satellite, sometimes the comet, and once in awhile, kincoras (i hit that pine pike corridor area a lot more before it became infested with scenesters, now I mostly avoid it), or the jade pagoda... the sunset, the smoke shop (seattle's 2nd greatest bar), or hatties over in ballard

i actually like all of the above mentioned bars better than the 3 you named... though they have their obvious charms as well...

I like, even love, many bars... but the twilight just reigns so far above any other bar i've been to in this city... WAY FAR above...

it rules!! its the best bar in Seattle, hands down.... i can't say enough about that place!

The Hopvine on 15th is my new favorite watering hole, D~ great food, a fab selection of beers on tap, live music on occasion and a totally unpretentious atmosphere complete with a friendly yet sans fromage barstaff. we should grab a drink there sometime!

Now, for great beers I have to recommend the Stumbling Monk. Really good imported beers with alcohol content as high as 9.5% and priced very reasonablely. No food, and it can be a bit crowded on weekends, but very friendly.

The Jade Pagoda is fine to be sure, but I couldn't help noticing no one has mentioned Charlie's, or the Canterbury?

I currently hold regular status at Charlie's and the Canterbury. Probably the Broadway Grill, too. Can't help it. I like the bartenders there.

Also the Duck Island Saloon on Aurora by Greenlake and Beth's Cafe. It's kinda divey, but blazed the trail in Seattle for having impossible to find import beers on tap. Absolutely has stuff you won't find anywhere else in town if you are into trying out new beers.

you guys are totally forgetting georgetown on this list. that neighborhood still has a sense of the seattle we all loved before the old strips were infested with hipsters and trustfund kids. the nine pound hammer is bar none my favorite. it meets all of your criterium, and the drinks are dangerously deep. nest door is smarty pants it is a bar/sandwich shop that id definatley worth visiting at least for the "lil philley" the best philley ive had here in seattle, and jules mayes has been remodeled and is very comfortable. all of these places are worthy, sometimes have live music, are patronized by the friendliest people ive found here and the neighborhood ambiance is accentuated by freeway overpasses and trainyards nearby

"lil Philley" at the smarty pants, Yummy, I agree the best Philley I ever had (Seattle or else where). I stumbled upon nine pound hammer and smarty pants when I was scoring music for a play at the Jem arts center. I am hungry damn may be I will convince myself to drive down there just for the Philley
