conservative company. it tastes like shit. I don't care if it is cheap.

Spend an extra buck and buy a microbrew that supports good causes.

This might be a thread better suited for the seattle beer snobs tribe. I'm mainly a microbrew/hard cider drunkard, and when I first discovered microbrew, I got into bashing the macrobrews. But I've since come to think that the macrobrews have their place. As in, most microbrews are ales, and when it's freakin hot out, an ice cold pilsner can hit the spot. Sure, if the pub or club is pouring a la conner pilsner, I'll go with that. But if it's sweaty and they're pouring the usual bullshit "micros" like Widmer hef and red hook and Alaskan amber, I'll go with the macro lager. And pabst is one of the better ones, clean without the aftertaste that you get with say, miller. There are a lot of microbrews out there that taste worse than pabst. Drinking pabst is not particularly cool, but drinking hefeweissen immediately labels you a douchebag.

And if you're a serious seattle drunk, you'll enjoy the sort of dive bars that don't serve the micros. I recall taking a fancy friend to the old Fronteir room, and she asked "what's on tap?" and the gruff lesbian bartender said "water." and walked away. Yeah, that was the cool. And drinking a ranier stubby in the Frontier, or a bourbon, bud back at the old Rendezvous is way cooler than sipping the finest beer at the latona.

i don't especially care whether a beer is microbrewed or not, i care whether it sucks or not. and pabst sucks. seriously.

if you (a rhetorical "you", not you personally, shamus) drink pabst because it's the cheapest thing and you have no money, good for you. way to work it out. if you drink it because you like it, way to go. but if you drink it because you think it makes you more authentic or working class, or because that one guy said it in that one movie, or for any reason involving irony, than screw it.

Then we're agreed. Though I didn't realize that Pabst had a poseur blue collar thing going for it outside of David Lynch movies. I have noticed that it's often the token macrobrew at local bars, but assumed that was because it was cheaper than Bud/miller/coors, and tastes as good or better. To me, at least. That's why the College Inn ended up getting pabst. Because it was cheaper and the owners liked it better than the big three. Coors and Miller, those beers really taste bad, as do most of the others in the cheaper price range. Bud's actually pretty clean tasting. I like rolling rock all right. Assuming ice cold, of course.

I don't hate Pabst, but I do think that it got hipper over the past few years. Black Label used to be the cool cheap beer. I still prefer Black Label if I'm going to drink the cheap stuff.

So when the fuck did pabst suddently become trendy again? it seems like just in the past year or so everyone's hot for PBR. Was there some cultural tipping point that I happily missed out on?

I was given a pabst a few weeks ago, and figured what the hell, it's free beer. I got two gulps into it and that was it. Fuck that shit. I like me too much to not spend a couple extra bucks so I can get something that doesn't take like they filtered it twice though the clydesdale.

You can also spend the extra couple of bucks and get something that went through the horse the haed way.. Face it, the Microbrew revolution has made a lot of great brews available, but there are also a lot of beers out there that qualify as craft brews and they're much worse tasting than Pabst, or whatever cheapo macro you like. I'm thinking of Red Hook's ballard bitter, Widmer's hefeweissen, Mac and Jack's Amber, and Fat Tire. Thsoe beers fucking suck, and embody the worst of beer snobbery. someone drinking a shitty beer, but thinking that they paid a little more for it and it has a lemon on the ridge, so it's better. Fuck that shit. An expensive beer can suck as bad as a cheap one. And often worse, since the macrobrew is at least consistent.

can't say as you did. or i'm too blind to see it. i'm sure that d-cup would make a great hat, though, depending on how many pbrs you drank...

and speaking of that haloween party, my costume was "white trash", and the 4 pbrs i carried in each hand and in each breast pocket really made the costume. and after the first 4, i didn't really mind the taste at all!

We-ell, not that I don't love a chilly PBR or three or four on occasion, but check out Georgetown's Bob's Brown Ale...the same folks who makes Manny's. It's a memorial to a friend who died, and all proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House.

And who says pickling my liver isn't a good cause?
